Principle Trainer profile
Edward Marshall
I used to be a farm manager, working on a large arable farm and thoroughly enjoyed driving all types and sizes of vehicles from combines to LGV C+E. Although I loved the variety of work and the responsibility, the time commitment was horrendous. This put a tremendous amount of pressure on family life and I missed the first two years of my eldest daughter’s life so things had to change.
I had always wanted to run my own business so I could mange my own time and destiny (I sometimes wonder about that when passing over responsibility). I enjoyed ski instructing at Sheffield part time during the winter months so I looked at going full time however the pay was not what I expected. This made me think. I enjoy teaching and I love driving so put the two together and you have the perfect job. I started training to become a driving instructor in February 2001.
My training went very well but I tried to rush it to get myself out of the job I was in. I passed part one on the first attempt, part two on the second attempt after not reading a no right turn sign in Horsforth and guess what Part Three was, yes, it was the third attempt, so I know exactly what my rescue trainees are going through on their final attempt.
Whilst taking my training I was very interested in the way instructor training was conducted by Michael Stanhope of Shire Oak Instructor Training. However I felt I needed to further my knowledge before venturing into driving instructor training. I found out about the Diploma of Driving Instruction through the DIA. which I passed in 2005 to gain the full Diploma. It was while doing all my studying both for the diploma and to qualify as an ADI I discovered there was a market for a visual aid manual. So I designed and wrote my own part three guide which also doubles up as a visual manual after passing part three and is also available in a laminated format for qualified instructors and now in a pdf format so you can download it and print off as many copies as you like to use as handouts for your pupils or laminate for yourself.
In September 2005 I read an article in the DIA magazine about becoming ORDIT registered, written by Phil Hirst. I have always been a believer of ORDIT Registered Driving instructor Training especially after nearly falling pray to a large training college. I attended the course by Phil Hirst in Feb 2006 and qualified for the ORDIT Register in June 2006.
I have taken what is regarded as the hardest driving test available to the public the RoSPA Advanced Driving Test. This is based on the way the Police are trained to drive following the Roadcraft book. The test is graded in to three bands Bronze, Silver and Gold, and I passed at the Gold level. This was a prerequisite for attending the RoSPA National Diploma in Advanced Driving, which I passed in December 2009.
I am currently attending the BTEC Level 4 in Coaching for Driver Development run by Tri-coaching Partnership. This aimed at gaining a full understanding of how coaching is incorporated into driver education and the benefits of using coaching techniques over traditional instructional techniques. I am now in the final stage of the course assignments and I will have my results by mid March 2012. So far my marks in the 3 modules I have done have averaged 81%.
Edward has recently gone through the Olympic Drivers selection process and been selected to drive athletes and high profile dignitaries to and from venues at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Para-Olympics. He has also been selected as one of only 230 driving instructor trainers to train the Olympic drivers through Peak Performance Driver Training.
