Existing car or small vehicle drivers

If you already have a licence to drive cars or small vehicles (category B and BE), you’ll keep your entitlement to tow trailers. Your entitlement to tow trailers will stay as it was when you passed your driving test.

To tow heavier trailers after 19 January 2013, you’ll need to follow the rules for new drivers, below.

New drivers from 19 January 2013

If you pass your test to drive cars or small vehicles up to 3,500 kilograms (kg) (category B) from 19 January 2013, you’ll be able to tow:

  • light trailers weighing no more than 750 kg
  • trailers weighing more than 750 kg, where the combined weight of the towing vehicle (car or small vehicle) and the trailer is not more than 3,500 kg

Category BE

If your trailer weighs over 750 kg and the combined trailer and towing vehicle weight is more than 3,500 kg, you’ll need to pass a further test. The trailer you tow must not be heavier than 3,500 kg. This test will be shown on your driving licence as category BE.

Make sure your Insured

17 September 2011 Categories: External News, JEM News, News

I have been looking into if a driving instructor giving paid monies tuition to a pupil in the pupils/parents car  is insured. To my surprise the insurance cover may be rendered invalid as the instructor is running his business through the pupils car. Below is a list of 8 insurers that I contacted ONLY 3 of the 8 will allow paid tuition in the pupils/parents car.

Direct Line NO

National Farmers Union NO

Admiral NO

Lloyds TSB NO

More Than NO

AXA YES

AVIVA YES

Liverpool Victoria (LV) YES

This list is in now way to be taken accurate it is each instructors responsibility to contact each insurance company as required when teaching pupils. J.E.M. Driver Training Limited accepts no responsibly for inaccuracy or changes the above companies make. This to display inconsistency in insurance company policies.

If you are an instructor doing this ensure you check with the pupils insurance company and ensure you tell them you are receiving money for time. If you were to be caught by the Police for such an offence you could lose your ADI badge as no insurance is 6 points on your licence and this could lead to the registrar expelling you form the ADI(car) register.

Winter Driving Workshop

13 December 2010 Categories: Driving News, JEM News, News

Dear Edward

I would just like to pass on my thanks for your winter driving tips session that you hosted in our school.  The material was presented in a very effective way, with an excellent mix of questions, information and videos.  You allowed us to ask questions, no matter how silly and provide no nonsense answers avoiding ‘techno babble’.  The handouts showed the main points and will serve as reference in years to come.

I certainly took your advice and have equipped my car better to tackle the best of the Yorkshire weather.

With best wishes to you and your family at this time of year.

Mike Sibley (and staff)
