TO BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR
The following legal requirements are:
* hold a full UK or European Union (EU/European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence;
* have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying;
* not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered in the Register;
* be a “fit and proper” person to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions, motoring and non-motoring, will be taken into account when we assess your suitability to be entered on the Register. From Spring 2007 applicants will be required to have an enhanced level criminal record check. The information from this check will be used by us to assess the suitability of persons applying for inclusion on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.. To help you decide if any conviction you may have could affect any application you might make, you can find the link to our statement on the suitability of ex-offenders in the related items box;
* Pass the two qualifying practical examinations within two years of passing the theory examination; and
* Apply for registration within 12 months of passing the final part of the examination.
BEFORE APPLYING
CRB Checks (criminal record checks)
It is now compulsory to have a criminal record check before you apply to the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) for entry on to the register to obtain your personal reference number. You will need to do this before you apply for a Part one theory test.
This is to prove you are a fit and proper person to become a driving instructor and fulfil the above requirements DO NOT START any training courses without doing this as you may not be allowed onto the register should there be anything on your record.
To apply for the necessary documents please contact by telephone:
CAPITA on 0870 850 2455 and they will ask you a few questions and then send you the required forms to fill in. Please be aware that this could take between 4 and 6 weeks to carry out the checks you will then be issued with a CRB reference number which you then put on the application form you send to the DSA
Qualifying.
The qualification examination is in three parts:
- a computer based theory test;
- a practical test of your driving ability; and
- a practical test of your ability to instruct.
You must take and pass all three parts of the examination in this order and must complete the whole examination within two years of passing the theory test. If you are unable to complete the examinations within this time you must start again from the beginning and pass each part once again. You can take the theory test as many times as you wish but you are only allowed a maximum of three attempts at each of the practical tests within each two year qualification period.
These are some of the challenges to overcome:
- Find a training system and a suitably qualified trainer that suits your needs so you keep motivated;
- Gain a thorough knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of driving;
- Become articulate in teaching skills and identifying the varying needs of pupils;
- Achieve the standard to pass all three stages of the ADI exams;
- Find the time to commit to training both at home and at the training premises; and
- Make a financial commitment in training costs, materials and exams.
Why are there these challenges?
- No legal requirements to obtain approved qualification in order to teach people to become a driving instructor, therefore standards may vary
- The exams are designed to ensure good quality of driving tuition
- Training can be undertaken using 2-1 and even 3-1 training methods in order to reduce costs but the effectiveness of these approaches and the increased time it will take to pass together with the lack of personal attention must be carefully considered
- Not all trainers are DSA ORDIT registered or taken any further training in order to train driving instructors
- The training requires a lot of personal commitment in time management and self discipline
So what do you have to look forward to?
- Personal satisfaction of starting a new career
- Being your own time manager
- Immense satisfaction of teaching people a fantastic skill for life
- Seeing the overwhelming joy of your pupils when they are told they’ve passed
- Meeting new people and having a varied day; never having two days the same
